Miraculous

The Miraculous Job of a Behavior Interventionist

Behavior Interventionists may also be called Behaviorists, Behavior Interventionist Specialists, or Behavioral Health Technicians. All of these titles represent an interventionist who observes children or adults who have severe behavioral health issues (behavioral analysis) and creates a customized plan and program overview (called an applied behavioral analysis) to help alleviate those behaviors. An interventionist requires a bachelor’s degree and masters in ABA.  These roles may work in special education classes or other public school or social work settings in behavior intervention.

Sessions can be one on one or in a school group setting, depending upon what the individual is struggling with. An individual with Autism Spectrum Disorder, for example, may require more one on one assistance to help them focus on a task at school while others may thrive working with a group.

The interventionist works to provide individuals with coping skills when they are having a behavior issue, to help find techniques to deal with transitions throughout the school day or to assist these individuals with their concentration skills on various tasks. There could be various triggers that cause problematic behavior, and an interventionist is trained to identify these triggers and either help avoid them or work with the individual to get through the behavior.

what

What are the Requirements of a Behavior Interventionist?

To be an effective Behavior Interventionist specialist, you must have the right job training, education, and experience. Although requirements vary by state, the majority will require an interventionist to have at least a Master’s Degree.

  • For a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), you must have a masters degree in one of their required disciplines, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Psychology, or Education. A Masters in ABA is the most common program for this certification.
  • For a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst, you only need to possess a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the same disciplines.
  • If you do not have a college degree but have some experience in the job field, you can become a Registered Behavior Technician by having at least 40 hours of approved job training through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB).
  • Most certifications will require job experience in some form, however, each approved college program provides internships where you would gain applied behavior experience. You can read each program overview by visiting the BACB website and clicking on the program you took or are interested in taking for more internship information.
